I have been using homemade lotion for years and years. I use it for my face, body, hands, and even as a lip balm. This recipe is particularly great for dry and sensitive skin.
Homemade lotion only takes about 5 minutes to make, which makes it an incredibly fast and easy recipe. This recipe is so customizable that it differs just about every time I make a new batch. I will walk you through all the different options you have when making this.
This lotion is oil-based, so some might think it has a greasy feel when applying it. However, I have used it for so many years that the oily feel does not bother me at all and now I much prefer this feeling of lotion to traditional store-bought lotion textures. i.e. this lotion feels like it is actually protecting and hydrating my skin!

Oil Infused Lotion — Optional
This step is completely optional! It is so easy, but takes patience.
If you want you can infuse your oil to make your homemade lotion extra fancy and slightly scented.
- Take a jar and add your favorite skin-loving flower petals (chamomile, lavender, rose petals, hibiscus, etc), and add just enough olive oil until the petals are covered. Add an airtight lid.
- Let this sit in a dark cool cabinet or closet for one month (or longer).
- After one month strain the flower petals out and keep the oil to use in your lotion.
Homemade Lotion Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Beeswax pellets
- 1/3 cup Unrefined Shea Butter
- 2 Tablespoons Coconut oil
- 1/2 cup Organic Beef Tallow (this is my newest modification, the recipe still works if you omit this)
- 1/4 cup Olive oil -Or- Almond oil -Or- Jojoba oil -Or- Grapeseed oil -Or- Avocado Oil (or a combination of these)
- 2 teaspoons vitamin E oil (optional)
- 30 drops of your favorite essential oils (optional)
Add more beeswax for a thicker “body butter” consistency or for a more waterproof version. Add less beeswax and more shea butter for a smoother, softer lotion.
Directions
- Add the beeswax, shea butter, tallow, and coconut oil to a double boiler. Stirring constantly, melt ingredients together, and remove from heat as soon as they are melted. They only need to be melted, not cooked.
- Add everything else and give it a good stir. Add to a glass jar or container and let cool completely.
Notes: Everything is shelf-stable, so it can remain at room temperature. I have had homemade lotion for months and months and it never goes bad.
The temperature of your home will affect the lotion– a cold house will make it harder and a warm house will make it melt.
Make it a whipped body butter by letting it cool completely and then use a mixer with a whisk attachment to whip it until a creamy consistency forms.
