Bread Machine vs Bowl
You can make a loaf of whole wheat bread using either a bread machine or the old-fashioned way. In my opinion, a bread machine makes it ridiculously easy to make bread, however, it certainly isn’t hard to make this bread using a bread bowl and loaf pan. (See the recipe card for both options.)
How to Activate Yeast
To activate the yeast, start by placing it into a small glass measuring cup. Next, add 1/3 cup warm water (same temp. as when heating up a baby’s bottle), and 1/4 teaspoon sugar. (The yeast ‘feeds’ off of the sugar and helps it to rise.) Allow the yeast to rise until it’s frothy and fully dissolved; about 5 minutes. (As seen in the photos above.)
Place the yeast mixture into the bread machine pan. Add remaining water and all other ingredients. Turn the bread machine on using the appropriate setting.
The bread goes through various stages of mixing, rising, mixing again, and one final rise before it begins to bake.
A loaf of whole wheat bread baking makes my kitchen smell simply amazing! (In the photos above you can see the top of the bread and what it looks like after it bakes.)
The photo above shows what a loaf of whole wheat bread looks like right after it is removed from the bread machine pan.
I like to use a bread slicer guide and a serrated knife to obtain uniform slices of bread.
A slice of hearty whole wheat bread pairs well with nearly any meal including, but not limited to, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s exceptionally good served warm with butter and/or a drizzle of honey, as well as various jellies and jams.

- 1 egg
- 2-1/2 cups white bread flour
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 3 Heaping Tablespoons rolled oats
- 2 Tablespoons dry milk
- 3 Tablespoons vegetable oil
- 2 heaping Tablespoons honey
Instructions
BREAD MACHINE OPTION:
Using a small measuring cup, dissolve yeast in 3 ounces warm water (same temp. as when heating up a baby's bottle), and 1/4 teaspoon sugar. (The yeast 'feeds' off of the sugar and helps it to rise.) Allow yeast to rise until it's frothy and fully dissolved (about 5 minutes). Place yeast mixture into bread machine pan. Add remaining 4.5 ounces water and other ingredients. Turn the bread machine on using the appropriate setting.
NON-BREAD MACHINE OPTION:
Using a glass measuring cup, dissolve yeast in 3 ounces warm water (same temp. as when heating up a baby's bottle) and 1/4 teaspoon sugar. (The yeast 'feeds' off of the sugar and helps it to rise.) Allow yeast to rise until it's frothy and fully dissolved (about 5 minutes). Place yeast mixture into a large mixing bowl. Add remaining 4.5 ounces water and all other ingredients. Stir mixture until it's smooth and soft.
Turn onto a lightly floured board; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour. Punch dough down.
Shape into a loaf; place into greased 8.5 x 4.5 x 2.5-inch OR a 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 50-55 minutes or until golden brown.
