Chicken fried steak and gravy is a timeless recipe that my both my mother and grandmother would expertly prepare. This entree is not only simple to prepare but also easily adaptable to gluten-free requirements (see recipe card).

Given its ability to retain heat and cook evenly, a well-seasoned cast iron skillet is my preferred choice for preparing chicken fried steak and gravy. I also enjoy baking homemade pies in a cast iron skillet.
Though I enjoy chicken fried steak served with mashed potatoes and some form of broccoli, numerous other side dishes pair well with it too. Dishes such as Asparagus with Bacon and Mushrooms, Crockpot Creamed Corn, or a Peach and Prosciutto Salad are just a few.

A homemade gravy can be quickly and easily prepared. Furthermore, it not only compliments chicken fried steak but also pairs well with a variety of dishes including biscuits and gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, and yummy pork chops.
How to Make Chicken Fried Steak and Gravy
Easy-to-make homemade chicken fried steak and gravy embodies the essence of comfort food.
Ingredients
- CHICKEN FRIED STEAKS:
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour (GF Option: use a gluten-free brand)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 cup finely crushed saltine crackers (GF Option: use gluten-free cracker or dried bread crumbs)
- 4 (4-6 ounces, each) tenderized beef cube steaks
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- GRAVY:
- 2 Tablespoon canola oil
- 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour (GF Option: Use a gluten-free brand of flour or you can use Arrowroot starch)
- 2 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.
- Gather three shallow dishes. In the first shallow dish mix together flour, salt and pepper. In the second dish, place the egg and milk and whip together. In the third dish place cracker crumbs.
- Dip steaks in flour mixture and coat well; shake off excess. Dip floured steaks in the egg mixture, then in cracker crumbs; coat well.
- In a skillet, heat oil over medium heat. When oil is hot cook beef approx. 6 to 8 minutes then turn steaks to the other side and continue cooking for another 6 to 8 minutes, or until golden brown. Pace an oven-safe wire rack inside a baking pan (with sides) lined with aluminum foil; remove steaks from skillet and place on wire rack. Place steaks in oven to keep warm while making gravy.
- After removing meat from the skillet, add oil to the skillet. Add flour and stir into any remaining scrapings left in the pan from the meat; cook for 2-3 minutes then gradually stir in milk. Heat mixture over medium-high heat (stir constantly to prevent burning) until mixture reaches a low boil and thickens to the desired consistency. Stir in salt and pepper.
- Remove steaks from oven; spoon gravy over each steak and serve immediately.
Notes
If the gravy is too thick, stir in a little more milk as it cooks until it reaches desired consistency.
If it's too thin, make a slurry by adding a tablespoon of flour and water together in a bowl; stir into gravy as it cooks. Repeat if needed until desired consistency.
