I absolutely LOVE donuts and Christmas, and gingerbread donuts are the perfect combination of both!
For these donuts, the list of different toppings to put on top is a mile long! For example, you could top your donut with whipped cream, icing, sprinkles, cinnamon and sugar, etc. I personally like mine with the cream cheese icing that I used for my pumpkin donuts.
How Do You Make This Gluten-Free?
Half of my family is gluten-free, so most recipes I make/bake are gluten-free. When I first made this recipe, it called for all-purpose flour. Since I was making it gluten-free, I merely swapped the all-purpose flour for gluten-free flour and added xanthan gum.
Donut Ingredients:
- 1 1/4 cup flour (use gluten-free for a gluten-free option. Plus add 1 teaspoon xanthan gum if your GF flour blend does not already contain it).
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 3/4 tsp. ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. allspice
- 3/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. baking soda
- 2 Tbs. melted butter
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 Tbs plain Greek yogurt (use sour cream for substitute)
Icing Ingredients:
- 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp milk
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease two 6-count donut pans. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, baking powder, baking soda
- In a separate bowl, mix butter, brown sugar, molasses.
- Add egg. Mix until combined.
- Mix in milk and yogurt.
- Add flour mixture to the wet ingredients (it’s okay to see bits of yogurt in your batter)
- Pour or pipe batter into donut tins.
- Bake for 13 to 15 minutes or until donut springs back when touched
- Once donuts have cooled, pipe or spread icing on top.
